Moleaer Elevates Dissolved Air Flotation System with Nanobubble Technology
LOS ANGELES, September 25, 2018 - Moleaer, the leading manufacturer of industrial scale nanobubble generators, is proud to announce they were selected by Hershey's Ice Cream to enhance the existing dissolved air flotation system at their Hershey, Pennsylvania wastewater treatment plant.
Hershey's Ice Cream worked with Glace Associates to identify emerging technologies that could improve the performance of their wastewater treatment plant's dissolved air flotation (DAF) system. The challenge that creameries face with DAF is achieving cost effective removal of the high levels of soluble biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) associated with dairy wastewater. Ineffective or insufficient treatment can lead to costly surcharges in wastewater discharge. After comparing multiple technologies, Hershey's replaced their existing high-pressure dissolution system with a Moleaer nanobubble generator. With minimal footprint, simple installation and low energy requirement, the plug-and-play nanobubble generator made an immediate impact on Hershey's DAF performance and costs.
"After installing the Moleaer nanobubble generator, we reduced our energy consumption by over 13,000 kWh/yr. (kilowatt hours per year), equating to almost $1,500 in annual savings," said Jason Laracuente, Automation Supervisor, at Hershey's Ice Cream. "Furthermore, the nanobubble flotation delivered a 37% reduction in BOD5 and a 24.17% improvement in TSS removal when compared to the existing high-pressure dissolution system. Additionally, we also noticed that the float sludge is more uniform and smaller in size than the original sludge, making it a better consistency for pumping."
Nanobubbles provide several unique benefits that make them well suited for a variety of flotation applications. Moleaer's nanobubble generator produce >500 million nanobubbles per ml that average 80 nm in diameter. At this size, the bubbles have over 200 times the interfacial surface area when compared to microbubbles. Additionally, nanobubbles exhibit a negative surface charge enabling the bubbles to bond to micro-flocs suspended in the wastewater.
"The combination of the nanobubble's larger surface area and their negative charge increases the attraction and collision rate of suspended particles, resulting in a higher percentage of particles attaching to the flocs and consequently removed from the wastewater," said Warren Russell, Chief Commercial Officer at Moleaer.
